Sun, 6th Jan, 2019 10 Mile Outcamp, Tarmoola Station, 60km north of Leonora, WA

8am 26 degrees, light breeze and cloudy. Nice temp for a sleep in.

Headed off for a detect and explore the area. Had a cuppa at breakaway area near one of the old wells not being used at the moment. Lots of caves for the roos to rest in.

I found a nice quartz crystal.

Continued exploring – found lots of old shafts, some deep and some shallow or have caved in.

Back home for lunch, 33 degrees, windy and cloudy.

I worked on our grocery order which Kym and Glen will pick up tomorrow when they head down to Kalgoorlie.

Got a call from Glen, having a problem with their big generator so we drove down to see if Steve could help. Unfortunately it needs a very special tool so Glen will try and find one in Kal tomorrow.

Back home for late drinks and leftovers for dinner. Nice evening.

Sat, 5th Jan, 2019 10 Mile Outcamp, Tarmoola Station, 60km north of Leonora, WA

The wind came back as the sun rose, strong and gusty south-easterly.

7am 22 degrees, clear sky.

Headed off to do our bore run. Packed lunch as we will be putting up some fencing as well as checking the bores today. Lots of cattle about as we head down to Glens Bore. The ‘boys’ are having fun head butting. Big bull looks angry.

Got to St Patricks Well and we saw the tank had split open. There had been a patch at the base and with the recent hot weather it must have let go.The windmill was still pumping but the water was just going over the ground and the trough was dry.

Steve got his thinking cap on and he set to work and changed the pipework so the water would go straight into the trough but as it has a float he was worried about leaving that for too long. Will come back later with the water pod which is on a trailer and use that as a tank for the time being. There is a new tank near our camp which Rob will have to get erected when he gets up here.

Continued on and put up the wire around the star pickets we put in previously and made the enclosure to keep out the cattle and donkeys. We even remembered to put in a gate.

At the next one I said to Steve that we think it’s hard just putting up a fence, fancy having to build a base for the tank like this one. Next fence completed at Grey Mare Well.

Checked all the others and used the last bit of wire to do one side of O’Keefe Well enclosure. Will have to get some more from the homestead to finish it and Glens Bore enclosure. The windmill ones are fine.

Back home for a cuppa. I rang Rob to let him know about the tank breaking. He will be up next weekend so he will deal with it then. I said we were taking out the pod and he thanked us for doing that.

Steve got some more pipe and connectors and hooked up the trailer with the water pod on it. Back to St Patricks where we used the winch to pull the busted tank off the concrete stand.

Pulled it some of the way then the cable slipped over the top. I hooked it on one of outlet holes and Steve got it clear of the slab.

Backed the trailer up onto the slab and changed the pipe so the water goes into it then reconnected the pipe to the trough. The wind started blowing and the water pumped into the pod. Water flowed into the trough again.

Home for a nice cool dip in our pool while we had our drinks. The water was colder from the cooler night so it was very refreshing.

6pm 33 degrees, clear sky and the wind has stopped blowing.

Nice evening though the mozzies are out in force again so dinner in the van.

Fri, 4th Jan, 2019 10 Mile Outcamp, Tarmoola Station, 60km north of Leonora, WA (exploring)

7am 23 degrees, cloudy and a very strong south-east cold wind is blowing. What a change from being so hot. Had to close the windows as it was so cold!!

Packed our lunch etc and headed out for a day exploring and detecting.

Lovely cooler day as we drove around looking a different places. Found some history information at Bundarra. It was the hotel then became the homestead for a pastoralist.

Imagine how this looked back in the day with the tennis courts on one side, the house in the middle and a few sheds on the other.

Anyone for tennis. Mum and Dad will be enjoying all the tennis on TV at the moment.

Walked around the back of the house which had a wide concrete verandah and a big tank stand.

Up the track a bit is the remains of the Great Western Mine which the hotel was named after originally. Checked out the well or was that the mine shaft – a long way day. The old car was used for racing as it had a roll cage and signwriting on the side.

Continued along the track and found a line of shafts.

The sky cleared a bit with the strong wind blowing. Headed back for drinks – no need to cool off in the pool today.

6.30pm 30 degrees – very nice.

Lovely sunset colours on the clouds.

The wind stopped after dinner. 10.30pm 27 degrees – lovely.

Thurs, 3rd Jan, 2019 10 Mile Outcamp, Tarmoola Station, 60km north of Leonora, WA

8am 28 degrees, light cool south-east breeze, so lovely for a change.

Sent Kaylene and Rick a text wishing them happiness for their wedding anniversary.

Nice morning with the cool breeze. Steve put a drum over Glen’s Bore head and secured it with star pickets as it is away from the enclosure fence we are putting up.

Lunch in the pool. 39 degrees.

I worked on a new jigsaw, only 300 pieces. Still working on the other 1000 piece one but they are very small pieces so it is a bit more tedious.

Steve pulled out an old fan from one of the dead cars at the dump and that worked well on it esky air conditioner – quieter too but he had to connect that to a battery. We have heaps of frozen water bottles to put in the esky to blow the cool air over us. As we turn off the generator at night we usually put the frozen bottles in the fridge to keep it happy.

I finished my jigsaw – nice one of rabbits.

Steve went for a wander with his detector but came back empty-handed. Erica rang while we having a drink. They had a wonderful New Year at Woodgate with everyone. Sad new though as her eldest sister Maree had a fall and looks like she has fractured her hip. They are sending her to Bundaberg so Erica will see her there. Her daughter Robyn is with her.

Had dinner on the verandah listening to the cattle moan and groan or is that ‘lowing’, as they wander in for a drink and nibble on the hay.

Into the van for a movie. Steve filled the esky with ice bottles and we enjoyed the movie with the cool breeze blowing on us – well done Steve.

Wed, 2nd Jan, 2019 10 Mile Outcamp, Tarmoola Station, 60km north of Leonora, WA

7am 31 degrees, no breeze and a clear sky.

Rang Kaylene and Rick for a chat. They are in Townsville for a wedding.

8.30am 35 degrees, warms up quickly. Forecast is for a night temp of 29 tonight which would be nice but it only gets down to that at 5am just before the sun comes up!!

After morning tea we drove out to the highway then across to the Round Oak (Jaguar) Minerals admin office. Spoke to Alan about detecting on their leases and he was fine with that as they aren’t looking for gold. They are underground 800m looking for silver, lead, zinc and copper and he shows us the underground map and said they are going down to 1km soon and they have gone sideways into a new area too. Amazing.

Drove north and checked out some other old mines – some just shallow shafts and another which is a deep pit with water in the bottom – no good for swimming.

The wind is back but it is so hot – better than no wind at all I suppose. The flies are bad too so while we had lunch in the pool I refilled my vegemite fly catcher with fresh vegemite (put it closer to the lid this time) and sat it near us – our entertainment – watching flies get caught!!

Rick had mentioned he saw on U-tube people making air-conditioners out of old eskies and fans. I googled it and Steve got to work creating something with the old bits and pieces here. He first tried a small water cooler bottle with a fan from a computer but it didn’t have enough flow. He then found a broken esky in the dump which he mounted to plastic elbows to direct the air flow and then tried our 12 volt fan. It worked but the fan was too big for the hole so we were losing the air flow. He will check out the old cars at the dump to see if he can pull out a fan motor from one of them. He was happy having something to do even if it is so hot. The breeze blowing through the shed was actually cooler than in the van or the cottage.

As the van was getting so hot Steve decided to put the sprinkler on the roof to cool it down which it did for a while. We sat near it while we had our drinks enjoying a spray of water when the wind blew it over us.

Cooked dinner in the cottage – at least that keeps that heat out of the van. One more day of 40s then it is supposed to drop into the 30s which will be good.

Thursday, 3 January 2019

Tues, 1st Jan, 2019 10 Mile Outcamp, Tarmoola Station, 60km north of Leonora, WA

Got home at 1am – no cattle on road, just a couple of road trains from the mines going about their business. The strong north wind is blowing hard so we don’t need the fans though it is still 35 degrees in the van.

7am 35 degrees, clear sky. I did some computer stuff then we had a cuppa in our pool. The north wind has changed to north west and is still hot.

After lunch we did the bore run. Steve had found some fencing wire so we enclosed North Well after scaring off the rabbit who was keeping himself cool by the tank.

We unrolled the wire at the next ones and just hooked it over the star pickets to do the next time. One fence is enough on a hot day like today.

Home in time for drinks in the pool with ice blocks in it. 5pm 43 degrees.

Kev rang to wish us happy new year which was lovely as last year we were celebrating with him and Linda in Bunbury.

Dinner on the verandah with the sprinkler cooling us down.

Mum and Dad rang to wish us happy new year too. Cyclone Penny crossed the coast over Weipa and will go out into the Coral Sea now and probably reform.

Our evaporative fan has decided it doesn’t want to put the water up over the fins so it is just blowing hot air now – just when we need it. Steve will put it apart tomorrow.

Breezy still but with the fan on it is comfortable enough to sleep.

Mon, 31st Dec, 2018 10 Mile Outcamp, Tarmoola Station, 60km north of Leonora, WA (New Years Eve) (2018 year list at end)

Last day of 2018 – wow this year has flown, though we have packed a lot in it with our big trip home and back via all the desert tracks.

7am 31degrees, clear sky and light breeze. Heating up quickly today. Watched our past photos from 2 years ago and we spent today with Kev and Linda at Greenbushes and Bridgetown and saw the new year in with them.

Cooled off in our pool while we have a cuppa. I had put some vegemite in the bottom of a fly catcher container I found as I have noticed they love our vegemite crackers we have for lunch. It worked too as they started going in through the little holes at the top to get to the vegemite at the bottom. Interesting pastime while we had our cuppa – watching flies get caught. Lots of cattle wandering in for a drink at the trough. Glad we moved the hay over there so I’m not getting any cow manure on this side.

Midday 40 degrees – caught up with my blog. New Year wishes coming in on Facebook.

Time for lunch then we packed up to meet Glen and Kym to start our New Year celebrations with a swim in the dam.

The water temperature was lovely so we soaked for a long time. As it is so deep it keeps the water temp nice and cool. Had a glass of bubbly and some nibbles – the wind is so hot when you get out of the water.

Decided to just go up on a hill near the homestead as the track to Penzance Hill was very rough Glen said – 2 busted tyres later. We were relaxing too much that we nearly missed the sun setting.

Malcolm and Kerry rang from Tassie to wish us a great new year. They were heading home from their celebrations as Malcolm has to harvest the lucerne – the life of a farmer.

Had dinner at the homestead and played Sequence. The boys are on a winning streak. Yummy homemade caramel slice for dessert and a few more games – the girls won a few. Messages coming through on the phone and Facebook – I sent off one message to everyone. 10pm Queensland is now in the New Year as we are 2 hours behind. Sent Sarah a message as she is in New York in Times Square with her friends. The movie on TV is ‘New Years Eve’ which is set there.

We had the TV on the ABC channel which was showing the Sydney celebrations and fireworks but in WA time. Counted down the 10 last seconds of 2018 then hugs and kisses for all. Here’s hoping 2019 will be just a great as 2018.

Packed up and headed home.
