Wed, 6th Apr, 2016 Perlubie Beach to Decres Bay-Wittelbee Conservation Park, Eyre Peninsula, SA (exploring Haslam and Smoky Bay)

The awning flapped all night but it is quiet now, 7am 19 degrees and overcast. Two vans who got bogged yesterday further down the beach had moved passed us but parked on the harder sand below the seagrass line. When I got up I could hear one guy revving and he was bogged about. We thought he was turning around but apparently they moved at midnight up onto the softer sand as the tide had come up higher and the waves were being washed up by the wind. Anyway he sat there for a while then eventually they worked it out and got themselves out.

Packed up and said goodbye to Kylie, Ian and Toby again!! Probably won’t run into them again as they are heading up the middle to Alice Springs soon but we might see them in WA somewhere as they complete their lap.

Drove off the beach and up into the Perlubie houses on the hill. Good view back over the vans on the beach.

Zoomed in on Ian and Kylie’s camper, we were parked just in front of them. The bogged guy is out and waiting for his friend to get out.

Drove up Flinders Highway and turned off to Haslam. Passed van after van heading to south so hopefully there will be room in the small camp area. Yep plenty of room. Our neighbours are the couple from Bunbury area, WA who we chatted to on the beach. They said there was about 15 vans in there last night. Parked up and made a cuppa. No whiting here but they got squid, crabs and Tommy Ruffs.

Put on our big coats as the wind has come up a lot and walked out to the jetty for a look. Rocky and lots of seagrass.

Some history information in a hut with an old wagon on rail lines behind it.

Onto the jetty looking to the other direction.

Chatted with a couple bravely fishing off the jetty for garfish and squid. Only catching little Tommy Ruffs. Walked back to the van with the WA couple (should have got their names) but they are heading home so we will probably see them on the Nullarbor again. He said the workers are pulling down the old Wood Shed which was built in 1911. The railway would have gone from here down to the jetty.

Decided to keep moving as the weather wasn’t looking like it was going to be nice again for a while (only going to get to 20 so probably won’t see the sun today). Continued on to Smoky Bay.

Passed the packed caravan parks. Nice beach area with pine trees.

Good fishing from the jetty here too ‘apparently’.

Zoomed in on south end of Eyre Island.

Drove around to the other side of the van park to the park for lunch. The swimming enclosure beside the jetty to protect swimmers from sharks!!

Nice homes on the beach front too.

Would be a lovely bay on a bright sunny day!!

A memorial to those who have lost their lives at sea around here.

History of the jetty.

An old whaling pot. Sad story about the men left to guard the excess whale oil.

Back to the main road then turned off to Laura Bay. There is camping here in the Conservation Park but we are heading further on to Decres Bay which is around the next point and the camp area in Wittelbee Conservation Park.

Zoomed in on the high part of St Peter Island, which is a very large island.

Found a spot overlooking the bay.

Might be fun getting down to fish!!

Interesting cliff face.

Still cold and windy so decided Steve could do my hair. He decided the new look needed a photo!!

Had a cuppa then put on our boots and went for a walk around the coast following old roads which have been barricaded off now but someone has just been through in a vehicle!!

Lots of scallop shells and broken bottles – popular spot with the locals!!!

Continued around.

Steve scaring me by walking over the bridge around the hole.

Looking back to our van.

Climbed over a dune and headed down to the beach. Only a few scallop shells on the beach.

Headed back to the truck – Steve spotted this spider and when he tapped it all these little spiders climbed off his back and ran over the ground.

The sun is trying to come out.

Walked across the point to look over Laura Bay.

Out to the point looking across to the island.

The birds like this spot.

Looking back to the van. Looks like Steve backed up to far and broke off the ledge!!

The sun broke through the clouds and a bit more blue sky appearing. Nice bit of colour in the sky as the sun heads down.

Mike and Ann rang to chat about WA and Palmer gold detecting.

The wind is settling down and the tide is going out.
