Summer
has arrived. Headed into Bunbury to do some shopping. Found a park at
Wyalup-Rocky Point overlooking the ocean for morning tea. Lots of basalt rock
here.
Walked
back into town as it is parking meters everywhere here. Tried to find another
cheap camera as this phone one is driving me crazy but unfortunately phone
cameras have made the little cameras nearly obsolete so will just have to wait
till my replacement comes.
Interesting
murals on the buildings.
The
old railway station which is the Information Centre etc.
Found
a couple of old buildings in town. Rose Hotel was established in 1865.
Back
to the truck and down the road – looking over Back Beach. Just a light breeze
at the moment – a lot cooler here than in town.
Further
south we stopped for lunch under a shelter high on the sand dune overlooking
the beach. The beach cleaner was chugging along sifting the sand. Sadly Bunbury
is known as a bad drug town.
Drove
down further to try and find the ‘clothes optional’ beach but missed the turn
off and ended up at Maidens Tuart Forest. Named after the two big dunes which
sailors thought looked like a maiden’s distinctive shape!!
Followed
the sign to the Lookout 500m but then we came to a cross road and no more
signs. Continued on towards the ocean but we think that was the ocean walk and
we should have gone up the hill!! Only had our thongs on so gave that a miss.
Back
up the road to the other Lookout on the map where we found the track down to
the secluded ‘nudist’ beach. Didn’t bother going down has we would get burnt if
we joined the crowd!!
Drove
back to town and stopped at King Cottage which the Historical Society have
taken over and refurbished with items from the late 1800 - early 1900s and created
a very interesting display of many donated items. It was built by Henry King, a
brickmaker, using his homemade bricks. I asked the lady if I could take photos
and she said yes so I got a few of the info and inside the house.
As
I headed out I noticed a sign ‘no cameras’. Oops – I did ask. Hence I didn’t
take any more of the other displays except when she told us about this piano I
had to sneak one more shot – hence it is blurry. This poor man from Italian
came to Australia with two of his pianos to create a new life for his family. They
are like the little ones with the bumps on them to make the tunes. Amazing to
see it in such a big form. Unfortunately WW2 started and he was interred for
the duration. After that life was hard and he didn’t make any pianos. Not sure
why his wife and daughter never came over after the war. He was naturalised in
1948 but then died of a heart attack in 1949. Sadly the rest of the pianos in
Italy where burnt for firewood so this one and another in Collie are the only
two left. It was made for hotels with a slot for a coin and each drum played a
few different tunes. They found this piano in an old shed and only one of the
drums was ok to use. Such a shame but at least it still works and she got it
going for us to hear.
Got
some of our groceries then back to the van to pack them away – got all the
windows and vents open as it is always hottest in the afternoon.
Went
for a drive down to the Inlet with Kev & Linda to take the dogs for a run.
As we walked through the shallow water we stirred up heaps of small Blue
Swimmer Crabs.
A
lot warmer tonight.
