Woke to the sound of rain drops on the camper. We got up and got sorted before the pop-top vinyl got too wet. Chatted with the others over breakfast. Steve is in trouble as he had commented about them packing up their camper-trailers when it is raining - and now it is!!
I took photos of some black ants that are boring out a tree. They carefully bring up the pulp and drop it over the edge.
We said farewell then headed off towards the Gillies Range Road. This time the dirt road was all wet but not muddy and slippery like it used to be when we were younger. The boys had some fun times trying to get their utes up and down the hills going into Fong On Bay.
We met some mountain bikers coming along the road then more and more. One lady waved madly at us and I realised it was our back neighbour, Karen. Not hard to miss us of course. Good on her though I would rather walk then ride the bike!
We turned towards Malanda. Not raining there but by the time we reached Millaa Millaa it was covered in misty rain and the clouds were hanging low. Mum called it ‘Brigadoon’ weather.
We stopped for a cuppa at Henrietta Creek. We just sat under the shade shelter then down came the heavy rain with lots of wind. Lasted about 10 minutes then we headed off again towards Innisfail. We turned off before Innisfail onto the B-Double route which is also the Canecutter Way. We meandered through the banana plantations and cane fields. A few people camping beside Liverpool Creek which is flowing fast and high from this rain which we are continuing to drive through. We came back onto the Bruce Highway at Silkwood then continued to Tully where the rain was falling heavily - of course. It is home to the Golden Gumboot.
Jon sent a photo of their new letterbox - we gave them money to buy one as an engagement present. Looks great with their new signs on the gate posts - just needs the gates now.
The rain stopped south of Tully but it is still cloudy. Topped up the diesel at a small BP servo in Cardwell as they were still only 209.9c/l compared to others that are up to 229.9 - crazy times with the terrible war happening in the Ukraine with the Russians trying to take over. It has made the fuel prices climb this last week. The Fuel App is very handy to be able to see where the cheaper priced servos are.
As it was a bit cool and miserable we decided on a pie from the local van at the park - very nice too. A chap messaged about buying Steve’s detector so I let Rick know as he is looking after it for us. Hope it goes too. We are dropping mine off to a chap in Townsville.
I rang Erica - she is improving though is still quite tired etc.
We continued on to Bluewater free camp spot and the chap who bought my detector came and picked it up. We had a cuppa and has it is still raining we decided to continue on towards Charters Towers.
We are now on the ‘Overlanders Way’. Still cloudy but no rain as we leave Townsville.
A ute coming towards us flashed its lights and the people waved so we thought something was wrong ahead or with us but we think they just like the geckos etc. Another car and then a truck driver gave us a wave too.
We pulled into Macrossan Park beside the Burdekin River. We stayed here when we came back after the Canning Stock Route. This time we won’t park under the railway bridge!!
Only a few other people here so we parked up.
Had our drinks then went for a walk. Lovely cool breeze too. 28 degrees in camper.
Quiet evening - Steve started a new book while I wrote my blog. Need to get back into the swing of writing it daily again.
The Police rang to say they had arrested one chap that tried to break in and he will go to Court on the 30th. They are still looking for the other chap. I had only commented as to whether we would hear if anything came of the video and photos we had of them. So nice to get a call to let us know.
Deb B texted too - she was one of the mountain bike riders so she saw us too.
Played Skipbo - Steve won 3 games to 1 - I have lost my touch or I have taught him too well!!
