Tues, 21st Feb, 2017 Cape Riche Campground, near Wellstead to Millers Point Reserve, west of Bremer Bay, WA

8am 18 degrees, overcast with rain through the night and a few more when we got up.

The wind has picked up bringing the clouds over then it clears for a moment and the sun shines brightly. Only a short drive (58km) again to our next stop at Millers Point Reserve.

As we headed off up the hill another dark cloud spat on us – so much for the clean van!!

A fox ran across the road – we saw a recently deceased one yesterday by the road. There was a photo in a newspaper Steve read showing a fox caught in a tree in the floodwaters with the farmer getting his sheep to high ground – bet he didn’t save the fox!!

Stopped at Wellstead to dump the dunny and top up the water tank. Another squall coming with a strong cold wind – the black cockatoos all rose together squawking – warning or happy for the rain!!

Continued on with the rain and wind pushing us down the highway. Down a steep descent where the poor big trucks were slowing crawling up the other side. Across the Pallinup River – very foamy.

Turned off the South Coast Highway onto Bremer Bay Road then onto a dirt road for 6km down to Millers Point Reserve. Bit of water lying around and a big bit in a dip but it wasn’t deep.

The camp host wasn’t around so we found a spot with a fabulous view over the inlet to the mouth of the Pallinup River – which has broken through the sand spit and is flowing into the Southern Ocean. Zoomed in on the cliff face too.

Walked over to the other side of the point where the wind was whipping up the river.

A chap was fishing for bream and we laughed with him for doing it in this cold wind – ‘mad dogs and Englishmen’ he said. I said that is ‘in the midday sun – not freezing wind’. But he was successful and caught one.

The chap said where we were standing is usually underwater except it has dropped since the river was flowing out. Around the point we spotted a flock of pelicans working together for their dinner. They would all paddle together in a circle then all disappear forward to get their catch.

Looking along the other side of the point and the windswept trees.

Back at camp for lunch overlooking the water. Steve spotted some vehicles on the ocean side so I zoomed in with the camera. They would have come down the 4WD track we passed further back towards Wellstead, to Boat Harbour Beach.

We were just enjoying being outside when raindrops fell and chased us inside so we read for the afternoon as the wind blew and dark clouds passed over us with a few drops here and there. Summer in the Great Southern hasn’t been too summery but by the weekend they are forecasting some better weather.

While I was on the internet Steve researched a new coil he wants – the gold is starting to call us.

Played a few games of Rummykub before dinner then finished watch Black Sails – a good series about pirates. We had finished Game of Thrones last night – now to wait for the next season.

10pm the wind has stopped and the stars are out. Found the Southern Cross and Alpha and Beta to locate south – seems different down here as they appear horizontal when drawing the line through them to get True South.
