Mon, 20th Mar, 2023 Bob & Margaret’s place, Florida Beach, WA (Hunting Giants)

Warmer night so kicked off the big blanket!

Headed off after smoko to find the Mandurah Giants. Apparently the one on the billboard at the shopping centre I took a photo of the other day wasn’t one of the ones around here. The one that burnt at Coodanup was laying down. The booklet just showed where a car park was and how far to walk etc and the basic location so Margaret figured out where they were. The last one is a secret one but Margaret worked that out to be down near Lake Clifton so we headed south to do that one first as it is supposed to get hot (34 degrees) today and this is the longest walk of the four we can get to. We are in the right place as there was an info board.

We followed the track around the edge of Lake Clifton (famous for the Thrombolites) for half hour or so and Steve noticed a small arrow at a junction that said Giants. Followed that through the Peppermint Grove.

This was at the bottom of a open area but further along we found the ‘Jyttes Hytte’, the Giant hugging a tree.

We were very impressed. Another couple took a couple of photos for us.

Walked around him taking photos. Would be great to see ‘under construction’ photos.

Headed back then walked out the track to the Thrombolites. Calmer day then when we had visited previously. The signs need fixing up.

That was certainly worth the drive down and as it was shady all the way it was a pleasant walk even with the temperature climbing up.

Drove back to Halls Head and wove around the streets to find the car park we needed to get to the next Giant. Found the info board and carving.

Followed the coastal path up and down a few dunes to where he was perched on the top looking over the Indian Ocean. Nice breeze blowing so not noticing the hot temperature.

Steve walked further up for another view. Would be great to photograph at sunset.

Margaret had walked back to the car when they reached the first rise as she realised there was a car park that was closer. She walked in from there so got a photo of her then. Bob had already headed back to the car.

We drove into Mandurah for lunch. Amazing there aren’t any seagulls here!

Continued on our Giant hunt and went to Marlee Reserve for the next one. Another longer walk but when we got there we realised we could have come in from another spot. Obviously they wanted people to get some exercise and made the walks long.

This one was great as it incorporated the roots of a fallen tree. He was called Little Lui.

There is one more in a garden at Subiaco in Perth so might look for that later. Headed back home for a cuppa and put our feet up. Got our exercise today.

Worked on my blog again - trying to catch up.

Drinks on the patio watching a group of guys (late teens) playing basketball in the park. So nice to see them all having fun. One got the ball in so we cheered - they waved back!!

I walked to the top of the path for sunset at 6.30 - lovely. Going, going, gone.

As I walked back I took photos of some of Margaret’s flowers.

David sent through the newspaper notice from the Funeral Home. They will also put up a page on their website where people can leave comments etc.

A warmer evening - no need for blankets tonight.
