17th to 23rd May, 2023 The Common, Nullagine to Bush camp, east of Nullagine, WA

Wed, 17th

13.6 degrees. Warmed up as the sun rose. Windy and a few clouds about.

Steve went wandering and I wrote up my blog so I can upload it when we go into town on Friday.

Rang Rick for a catch up - Kaylene was at work. Tried David and Wendy but they were on the road having had a wonderful time at Cobbald Gorge - we will have to go there as everyone has been lately! Tried Rebecca but no answer. I text Jon and Dad to say we were in phone contact. Of course will try ringing Dan tomorrow for his birthday.

Rang Ray and Carol. They had a good trip to Canada though they ended up with Covid so not happy about that. Looking at heading to NT in a couple of weeks. Will keep in contact in case we decide to go that way too.

Very windy today which is keeping it cool too. At 3pm we rang Terry. He had picked up his new second-hand Hyundai Tucson and is very happy with it and the trade-in they gave for the other two cars. It is automatic which will be good and better vision for him then the ute. David sent us a photo of the car at the dealers.

He had a good time with Maralyn and Greg at Woodgate though their little puppy scratched his legs so he needs to watch they don’t get infected. Maralyn posted up with photo.

The wind settled a bit so Steve went wandering again. I sorted the movies on the hard drives. I rang Rick back about Facebook request and Kaylene was home so had a lovely long chat with her.

Drinks watching the sun set through the window as it is a bit chilly outside now. All quiet here now the wind has stopped howling.

Jon rang - another week and he’ll be home and heading off for his golfing boys escape to Bali with a few mates.

Thurs, 18th

34 years to the day our eldest son, Daniel, was born at 1am. I still remember it all so clearly. Sent him a text as he will be at work and we will ring him later.

13 degrees minimum, 16 degrees by 7am. No wind to start but by 9am it was howling again.

Rebecca rang back for a chat. They are about to leave for the airport for a visit to Sydney then Christchurch to see their daughters, spouses and grandchildren.

Daniel rang when he had finished work so we wished him a lovely birthday and caught up on what has been happening at home and work.

Drinks inside again as the sun disappeared.

Fri, 19th

Cool morning again. Packed up and drove the few kilometres into Nullagine and around to the Van Park for the night.

We had booked the only unpowered site left on the website but it was still taken but Mary said just go into 6 where we were last time as it was now free which suited us better. Got set up and put the washing on then washed my hair - luxury to have a long shower.

Someone had taken the books and DVDs I had left and left a few more DVDs so I got two new ones but no books. Found the Shire’s new pamphlet with some history.

Steve fixed the sway bar again and reconnected the front actuator again. I gave the van a clean then went around to the Post Office to check if the tyre pressure sensors had arrived as the app on my phone said it was due yesterday. The chap hadn’t finished sorting it and said to come back at 12.30.

Walked back and made lunch. I checked the app and now it says the parcel has been delayed. I still went back to the Post Office and there is was - so much for up-to-date info from Australia Post!! Steve put the new sensors on - he thinks the old ones either didn’t like the river crossing when we did the Kimberleys so the battery in them just doesn’t last long enough.

I did my baking and then put all the dry clothes away.

Chatted with the other campers - some were here last time so we caught up on what they have been doing. Tony & Penny helped Mary out when she had to go to Newman and they had a ‘fun’ time dealing with roaming pigs. Eventually they moved on as they were coming into the van park. They think they might have come from the community houses down the road.

Had early showers as it has cooled off and it was nice to have a good soak. Put the Chromecaster on and watched two good movies on the You-tube channel.

Sat, 20th

Windy and clear sky. Made use of the showers again before we packed up and headed off.

Topped up with fuel ($2.49/L) then headed back out Skull Springs Road. Tried one track but the creek crossing was too washed out so we couldn’t get through. As the companies aren’t using the roads they are falling apart now.

Continued on to the pending leases of Valroc’s near the turn off up to Mosquito Creek. Found some old scrapes and parked up on the top of a small hill. Very windy.

The wind settled a bit as the sun set and it cooled off quickly so early showers then dinner.

Tues, 23rd

10 degrees again, so glad we have our heater.

Had a lovely couple of days here. Steve pumped the water in the buckets into the truck so we are full again.

When we got in to leave a text came through from Jon with photos of his Cert 3 drilling certificates - well done. He flies home tomorrow then off to Bali with his mates for a few days playing golf. I told him our plans then sent a text off to Margaret so she knows too in case we have any issues. Mickey posted a photo of Chris on FB for his birthday so sent him a happy birthday message too.

Back to the main road and along to the next lot of Valroc leases. Tried a few tracks and meandered but no joy.

Stopped at the last lease and set up camp. Nice open area so we can have a fire and get rid of some rubbish before we move on.

We have tried here a couple of times but didn’t find anything. I stayed and read and Steve went for a long walk.

The wind comes and goes but it is a lot calmer than the other days so all good for a fire. Some clouds are building in the west which blocked out the sunset.

We can see the stars and quarter moon in the east and Steve spotted the space station when I went in to cook dinner.
