Sun, 14th Dec, 2014 Wet Cave Reserve, Caveside (Lobster Falls)

Lovely sunny morning. Texted Jakob for his 21st birthday today. How the years have flown.

Headed off early as we have 2 two hour hikes to 2 waterfalls today. Back through Mole Creek and past the big Tassie Devil.

Stopped by the road and headed off up a 4WD track to find Lobster Falls. We both had walking sticks today as it really does make a difference. I was using mine mostly to knock down the spider webs as we went along. It was a nice walk to start with.Steve said they put out the ‘green carpet’ for us.

Nasty prickly bushes though were trying to get us!!

Steve clearing the path.
Still easy walking so far. Glad they cut a path through this one.

A few pademelons dashed off as we wandered along the path.

The path started closing in.  Then we started going up hill.

Another big log to get over.

We seem to be wandering along the edge of the hill around a farm. Passed a house on the other side. Came across a clearing on the side of the hill which looked as it was used when they were logging this area. Eventually heard the river then looked down on it.

The track was getting very narrow now so glad we have the walking sticks.

Found our own Alum Cliffs. Same type of rock formation.

Looking at the top of the falls.

Lobster Falls.

The track goes straight down now to the creek and is very rocky.

Yeah we made it down.

The water is called Lobster Rivulet – what difference to a river or a creek!

Steve enjoying a rest. The brochure said we might see a freshwater lobster but the water is a bit stir up from the recent rain.

Now the climb back up the rocky path and back along the narrow track.

Back out to the track. Was quicker coming back.

Great internet reception here so made a cuppa and did some blog uploads.

Got a text from Craig & Kathryn we met at Cooee Point. They are heading our way so we might catch up in Deloraine. Headed off again to find the turn off to Montana Falls. Passed more poppy fields.

Missed the turn to Montana but by the time we were going to turn around we were in Deloraine so stopped at the Information Centre for the toilet and get some more info. Lots of old buildings around here. I have a heritage walk brochure so will have a good wander when we stop here.

Found a couple of the “Streetscape Sculptures”. Look better that the weird Sculpture Trail ones.

Deloraine was the home of a famous race horse, Malua. Great information here.

Helpful people at the Info Centre. Montana Falls is now private property so we won’t be doing that one. There is a Woolies here so will get groceries when we arrive on Tuesday. I got directions to the Racecourse where there is a 48 hour free camp. We checked it out and there were a few campers and looked nice. You can walk across the bridge over the Meander River to a park. We drove round and had some lunch. Looking across the weir to the old power station.

Steve went for a walk with the camera along the river.

Rotary built this suspension bridge and when he got to the other end he found the Apex Van park which is right beside the river. They charge $30 a night.

I finished doing my blog uploads.

Art!

Headed off as the sun is shining so we want to get some washing done. Passed the other white flower fields of Pyrethrum.

Great teapot made out of a grain silo.

Stopped at Melita Honey shop at Chudleigh as it was open today. Busy too like their bees. Lots of different flavours of honey and honey combinations, eg with hazelnut, strawberry etc.

Cute bee things to buy.

Watched the bees do their thing as we enjoyed a lovely honey icecream. I had hazelnut and Steve had coffee.  It was fascinating watching them through the glass.

Lots of information too.

Headed back home passed all the sheep, seemed a lot in this field.

The dairy cows were heading in to be milked. Should have stopped to see if we could watch.

The Great Western Tiers looks magnificent in the sunshine.  Took some photos from one side to the other where we are camped. Could use one of those panoramic view cameras here.

We climbed up through there yesterday to Westmorland Falls.

Got all the washing done using the lovely clear water from the creek. Cooked spaghetti for the first time in 4 months so Steve can’t complain!!!

Steve was looking out the window at the long grass and made the comment “it’s been 4 months since he pushed a mower!!” Ain’t life great!!
