Lovely
sunny morning though cool, 16 degrees at 8am. The river is still dropping. We
are on the shallow side so more rocks are visible now.
Worked
on my blog and Steve did some maintenance.
After
lunch drove into Victoria and through Towong – only a few houses and large
cattle/sheep properties and a famous racecourse. Part of the movie, Phar Lap,
was recorded here because it had an old world grandstand and wooden railings
around the track.
Onto
Corryong which is famous for the ‘Man from Snowy River’ – Jack Riley. Pressed
the button and listened to the poem. Will have to dig out the DVD and watch the
two movies.
Into
the Info Centre to enquire about roads etc so we can get to the source of the
Murray. A group of younger people came in wanting the same thing as they had
gone to Tom Groggin to cross there and it was too deep. She showed us some
photos of the area – just in case we don’t make it.
She
gave me the program for the Man from Snowy River Bush Festival in early April –
will definitely do that when we get back here. There is also a museum so I
decided to do that when we return.
Up
to the lookout with lovely views up the valley toward Towong.
Zoomed
in closer to the valley to the east – towards Towong.
On
the other side of the hill to more farming area and mountains.
Heading
back down, looking over Corryong and to the west.
Topped
up with the some water and found some friends, Bison, I think, as there a farm
further along the road.
Tough
boy with his nose pierced!!
Back
to the van for a cuppa then off again to travel further up the Murray River to
Biggara. Lovely drive along the side of the river past Upper Towong.
Looking
up the valley. The Alpine Way goes further east from the Murray before it meets
it again at Tom Groggin.
Then
looking down the valley.
Scared
a few deer who were crossing the road but they were too quick for me to get a
photo. The cows were all lining up ready to be milked at the dairy. Through the
locality of Biggara then across the Murray River back into NSW. Nice new bridge
as the old one looks had it.
Further
upstream from here is Tom Groggin somewhere through those mountains.
Climbing
up a hillside gives great views down on the winding Murray.
The
road took us up and over the hill to the other side where there was another
valley.
Past
the property called ‘The Poplars’ – I wonder why!!
Over
the Indi Bridge back into Victoria.
There
is a great big area for camping area with plenty of room to have riverside
views. Will mark this in the book for when we return.
Back
to Upper Towong to check out a big rock and plaques. The site of the school in
1914 and a memorial to two locals who lost their lives in WW2.
Back
into NSW again and the van. The rocks are getting more exposed. The lady at the
Info Centre said it could also be due to the Hydro Scheme, whether they are
letting water out etc as well as the rainfall.
Our
neighbours said that big log in the middle lodged itself there just before we
arrived – it was half covered in water then.
Nice
evening by the fire eating tea. Mr Platypus didn’t show himself.
