Sat, 1st Oct, 2022 Rest area near Hamersley Gorge, Karijini National Park, WA

Clear sky, 16 degrees minimum.

Quiet day reading and getting my blog up-to-date. Steve went for a walk down to the gorge turn-off and found out that the fire was from a car that caught alight.

Cool breeze still, bringing more clouds over again.

After lunch we went for a walk along the track behind the open parking area and found more camping spot. One was on top of a small hill and gave a fabulous view, can see across to a mine site against another lot of hills - I didn’t take my camera. Will come for a drive tomorrow as the track continues on a long way to the hills.

Walked back down to the gorge entrance and the range was just coming out. Behind him was a tow truck with the burnt-out Toyota 200 Series on the back - nothing left of it. The ranger said the gorge will be closed again tomorrow as there is a lot to clean up after the fire engine covered the car in stuff and there is diesel and oil too. He thinks it was a short in the DC to DC charger under the bonnet. Luckily the couple weren’t hurt and they had left their caravan in Tom Price so they have somewhere to go to till they get a new car sorted. At least we have been here before and with the cloudy weather it would be cool to get in the water!

We asked him about the 4WD track but he didn’t know anything so I suggested he should have a drive one day.

We walked back - he didn’t come up to tell anyone that it will closed tomorrow. Hope they put up a sign back at the turn off so people don’t waste a trip out.

Had a cuppa then did my baking. More campers arriving. One couple stopped to ask about the gorge closure - bit annoyed the NP staff hadn’t put up a sign otherwise they wouldn’t have driven all the way out.

Had drinks outside as the wind has settled. We have a fat little spinifex pigeon wandering around our feet and a couple of little birds are enjoying the water out the end of our drain pipe.

Very tranquil till the mozzies arrived! No wind.

Inside for dinner and the final part of the Chernobyl series.
