Woke
to the pitter patter of rain on the roof. At 8am it was only 11 degrees so very
slow start to the morning – put the heater on to get us going!! I am reading
Steve’s book by David Mason about his trek across Australia from East to West
with his 3 camels. It is his diary and is very interesting.
At
10am it is still only 13 degrees but the sun has come out so sat outside with
our cuppa trying to warm up.
I
rang the Maria Island ferry and spoke to a nice lady who will find out if we
can just go out for the boat ride and maybe down to see the Painted Cliffs. She
will get back to me when we talks to the driver.
I
worked on my blog while Steve chopped and chopped all the wood we collected
yesterday. We have plenty for a while now and heaps left over so he started the
fire going now. Made some pumpkin soup and heated up leftover chicken wings for
lunch and enjoyed sitting outside by the fire.
The
Ranger called in and I mentioned Maria Island. He said it would be rangers
going over for the overnight to do an animal count. I said about staying and he
said there are great cells with bunks in the Penitentiary that we can stay in
with fireplaces, wood and cooking facilities. We just need blanket and food. I
rang the Triabunna Info Centre to enquire about staying - $44 for the night for
the two of us so we think we will do that and we might get to see a Tassie
Devil too. They put them over there to build up their numbers after they were
all dying from the facial cancer but of course then they started eating all the
wildlife on the island!!
I
baked a banana and walnut cake and some fudgy wudgy cookies then made some
piklets for afternoon tea. The sky has cleared and it is a beautiful afternoon
even though the breeze is quite cold. The fire is working well keeping us warm.
Steve
cracks me up with his commentary that he thinks is being said by the different
people calling in here – some whizz in, take a photo then leave – others drive
around and around trying to decide where to park. We also pull over and go for
a walk to check out a campground so we don’t get ourselves stuck somewhere.
4.30pm
and it is getting cold even though we are by the fire. I got the thermometer
and it was down to 8.4 degrees already. Steve put some more wood on the fire.
We had a glass of port for happy hour to warm us up. It got down to 7.2 then
the breeze stopped and went back to 8 degrees. The kookaburras laughed again as
the sun set.
I
rang Anita and Brian to see how their trip to UK and Europe went – they had a
wonderful time. Had our tea by the fire then back into the van where it was
still 16 degrees but dropping. Rang Kaylene and Rick for a chat. Rick is
looking forward to going up the Palmer with Steve and Kaylene is looking forward
to lots of walks with me!!
9.30
and it was 15 degrees on the main thermometer but we put the probe one on the
floor and it is only 10.7 degrees – can’t wait to get our heater.
