9 degrees in the van with another clear blue sky. Traffic back on the highway but we slept well last night.
Getting slack forgot to take our camp yesterday when we pulled up.
Mum
rang to say her name was called out in the Brothers Sunday night member’s draw
for $24,000. Dam. They missed $10,000 a few years ago at Cazalys on a Sunday
night and then Tracy’s name was called out at Brothers a while back too and she
missed out on $19,000. Shame but at least it proves their names can come up.
She saw Veronica and Faith and both are doing well.
Only
need a jumper for the first bit of the day as the sun is warming up nicely now.
Drove
to the wreckers and the chap took us straight to a 2006 Mazda 2 with smashed
front. The seats were in great nick and they haven’t been in the weather etc.
Got the two for $150 and the chap got them out of the car for us. We said we
were down for Bathurst and he asked what we followed – I said Ford so he said
he was happy to help us!! When we went in to pay, the chap was actually the
owner, Les Lawry and he showed us an article in a Hot Rod magazine about his
‘Man’s Cave’. It is full of restored old Ford hot rods of the 1930s plus a
range of old Falcons and Mustangs. Impressive.
I
said how lovely the canola fields were and he said that they lose their colour
in a couple of week’s time then they start to smell – like old oil. He said the
farmers would have liked another inch of rain now but it doesn’t look like they
will get it.
Loaded
in the seats and headed off again. Up the hills to the Central Tablelands.
Through Lyndhurst, established 1861 to 660m elevation.
Through
Carcoar – The Town Time Forgot – 730m elevation. There is a free camp by the dam
here we were going to stop at last night before we detoured.
Long
slow climb out of Carcoar to 870m where we saw the road to the Dam and a Wind
Farm viewing area.
Up
to 920m then down into Blayney, established 1843, at 860m elevation.
Passed
the Blayney Dog, Car, Truck and Semi Wash – what about the boat!!
Two
kilometre steep descent from Fitzgerald Mount at 940m down to 820m at
Bathampton. Nice view going down.
At
Evans Plains we passed Hen and Chicken Lane – fancy saying that as your
address.
Down
the hill into Bathurst (700m elevation).
Parked
near the Info Centre and unhooked the van. I went into the Centre to get an
address of a sheet metal fabricator as Steve needs some metal to make the base
for the chairs. Found him and ordered some metal – cost more than the chairs!!
Now to Bunnings for the bits and pieces to put it all together. I wanted to
create a herb garden but I found one already down with 5 herbs - parsley, mint,
basil, oregano and chives – for $20 so that will do me fine. Stopped at Big W
for some thick plastic cutting boards that Steve will use between the metal
plates to make the seats swivel – he is amazing how he works it all out.
Back
to the van for lunch and I put on the silverside for dinner in the Ecopot.
Leanne rang as they were about 25km from Sofala so we said we should be there
about 3.30 and we would meet them at the cross-roads. Hooked up the van then
went around into the Showgrounds to use the dump point and fill up with water.
Lovely pink trees.
Up
the steep range for 4km to Wattle Flat area at 940m then 910m at Wattle Flat
Village. Drier scrub and fields up here. Steve will have to have another got
detecting here as this is the only place he found any gold in NSW.
Down
off the plateau for another 4km steep descent to the cross-roads at Sofala
beside the Turon River at 580m elevation. Great to see Leanne and Rick again.
Back in the cars, through the main street of Sofala – hasn’t changed from last
year!!
Decided to park in the more open area to get good sun on the solar panels rather than go back to where we camped last time down and across the river. As it is the long weekend coming up we figure a lot more campers will be turning up.
Had
a cuppa then got the timber to get the fire going as the temperature drops as
the sun lowers. Great night chatting.
