Sun, 10th June, 2018 Bush camp, Mary River Mine, south of Halls Creek to Wolfe Creek Meteorite Crater National Park, WA

Woke to squawking cockatoos as they moved on. Nicer temperature 19 degrees as 6.30am.

Packed up and explored more areas but with no joy. Lots of kangaroos about. Steve decided he had had enough exercise so we went back to the Tanami Road and headed south to Wolfe Creek Meteorite Crater. A bit corrugated in parts though the north bound section looks worst after all the traffic coming up from the south. A few vans passed us going slowly.

Interesting hills.

We have been following a trail of VB tins that have been tossed out a car window – thirsty bloke/s.

Muster time is on.

Good use for old satellite dishes.

Finally that bloke has finished his beers so now he has tossed out the carton!! Lots and lots of anthills as we travel through flat open country.

Turned off at the old Caranya Station – now under Ruby Plains control. I’m on gate duty again. Across dry Wolfe Creek.

Through another gate and past the old homestead.

The crater rim looks like a hill.

Two couples from Sunshine Coast area with their big trucks had driven in just in front of us.

Checked out the info board. Other info I had said the crater was named in 1889 after Robert Wolfe, a Halls Creek storekeeper and prospector. Made lunch and sat under the shade shelter chatting with the other couples. We decided to set up camp and do the rim walk in the morning as it is quite hot now.

As it is a National Park the campground is well away from the ‘carpark’ and there are no fires allowed but that doesn’t seem to stop anyone. In each of the camp bays there is ash from fires. We chose one and set up camp. Put out the solar shower as we won’t be having a fire. We had done the washing so got that out to dry.

I worked on my blog for a while and put Sandy’s songs on the Android phone so we will have something to listen to. Steve wandered over to the others for a chat and to check out their trucks.

A camper-trailer and a van pulled in too.

I joined them for drinks as the sun set. Beautiful colours. I even took a video of it hoping to get the green flash but it didn’t happen.

The evening star came out and I managed to get it in the photo.

As we were eating dinner we heard gunshots – not the thing to hear when everyone is talking about ‘Wolf Creek’ murder TV series.

While we were playing cards we heard a truck coming along the track. Eventually it pulled into the campground and we saw it was a tour group bus with a trailer on behind. Strange to be arriving so late. They all filed out and put up their tents etc with lots of chatter. Their dinner smelt nice – lots of garlic. They were all still chatting when we went to bed.
