Wed, 15th Aug, 2018 Wongai Camp, Cape Melville National Park, Qld (fishing)

Lovely clear morning. Still windy but not as strong. Hasn’t blown the flies away though. Bob and Margaret didn’t get much sleep with all the wind last night buffeting their roof-top tent.

Got the fishing lines organised while Steve cast for bait. Lots of small garfish and a few mullet along the water’s edge. Margaret is all set.

I played with a crab for a while that wanted my bait.

The water is so clear I could photograph a crab with his cone shell wandering by.

Had a few nibbles then I hooked something but it got off. Some big sea mullet are swimming around so it might have been one of those. Spotted some turtles and a dugong further out as the water was so clear.

Margaret caught a mud crab who managed to get tangled in her line.

A few diving birds and only one pelican floating around.

Nothing else biting so we had lunch then played a few games of Dice in the shade of the big leafy tree beside our camp.

Relaxed and read for the afternoon then after a cuppa we went for a walk up the beach. Bob decided he wanted to find the old plane wreck of the Allied Forces that crashed during WW2 so he headed off. Margaret and I picked up a shell or two – should have brought a bag!! Steve found a beauty and a great piece of coral.

Better view of the ‘black mountains’ behind us.

We continued to the point then Margaret and I turned around. Steve caught up with Bob and they found part of the old plane wreckage. The memorial to the pearlers who died during Cyclone Mahina here in 1899 is further along. I found this photo I took years ago of it on Cape Melville point.

Map of where we are.

Back to camp and another try at catching some fish as the sun started to set. We managed to hook a few grunter, trevally and bream so we had a nice feed of fish for dinner.

Tried the panorama setting on the other phone camera.

Still very windy with a few clouds about but the sky is clearing.
