Tues, 20th Jan, 2026 (am) Bush camp off Thomas Road, Woolooga to RV Park, Wondai, Qld (exploring Kilkivan & Goomeri)

Cool morning, 19 degrees min but by 7am it was up to 24 degrees. The sun is shining brightly in the clear blue sky.

Packed up and continued into Woolooga - nice pub, hall then the 1910 Tavern. Parks and homes on the rises on either side of the road.

Continued on then right turn onto the Wide Bay Highway. Through grazing country again into Kilkivan - Home of the Great Horse Ride. Clouds are coming over.

Stopped at the park to check out the info board. Gold was found near here in 1852. We passed a placed marked on Wikicamps where you can pay to camp and detect for gold.

Walked across the road to the horse and rider statue.

Headed down the main street checking out the history plaques etc. The sign at the Museum needs fixing. The town was moved 4 times!

Cute drawings on the buildings here. Henry Penny and Locket the horse.

Across the road is St Matthew’s Church. Further up the hill is another church - St Kevin’s Catholic Church.

Continued down the street. Looking across to the Federal Hotel.

Nice Bottle Tree.

Around to the old railway area to the Rail Trail info. Great history info.

Wandered back up the other side of the street.

Back to the truck then we continued on the highway to Goomeri. Parked in the long vehicle parking behind the hotel and went for a wander. First the rail trail then the stone pumpkin by the picnic shelter. They hold their Pumpkin Festival here on the last Sunday in May.

History walk info and about the Town Memorial Clock.

Continued down the street reading the history plaques on the buildings.

Across to the park with a big timber wagon. On the info board I noticed it mentioned a waterfall. Will ask at the Info Centre about it.

Continued along the street - lots of little cafes etc. The old bank.

I took a photo of this mural when we came through here in November. Glad we are getting to stop and explore these little places now.

Chatted with two chaps at the Info Centre and they gave us directions for the falls. There is a free camp there too. Across the street to a middle island of the two roads - has a grassy park and picnic area. Then across the other street and along the road we came in on.

At the end was a huge building. I thought it was an old hospital but it was a Hall of Memory from the wars, erected in 1926. Leased out as a silent picture show place to start with.

Back to the camper then back along the road to find Kinbombi Falls. We pulled off where a chap was selling mangoes and bought two Bowen mangoes and asked for advice. He said to continue on to the next turn off. We did - new acreage blocks have just been opened and most had sheds or vans on them with slabs being set up for homes.
