Up
at 5am again for 6am start on the gate. We could almost say it was a bit warmer
as we walked down but as the sun rose the temperature dropped and we froze. Racegoers
have been lined up since 5am!! Steve and I are on the early entrance for
drivers etc so had a ball chatting to them as they all arrived. Mark
Winterbottom came straight to me to be scanned after our meeting yesterday
which was great. David Reynolds was with him. When Red Bull came through I said
to Roland Dane as he held up his card the wrong way, to flip, he looked and I
said the card not you, as I have to scan the bar code on the back. Steve said
as he went by he had a big smile on his face. Wished Jamie Whincup, Paul
Dumbrell and their engineers good luck too. Ludo, who is a Formula 1 engineer
designer that helps with their cars had a Guest Pass, so I said thanks Mr Guest
and he laughed yesterday. Today he said he was Mr Guest!!! Shane Van Gisbergen
was with his dad – he was taller than I thought. Jonathon Webb was very chatty.
Can’t get photos with them as we are “working” but it is great to be able to
chat with them as they pass through. Got a cuddle from Volvo drivers personal
trainer/masseur as I said my back was aching!!! The airforce guys were cute too.
Better than trying to get them in the pits etc as they were happy to chat as we
were Volunteers – worth the work!!
Ducked
out while the V8s had a practice and saw Warren Luff in the Holden car hit
Craig Lowndes in Turn 2 going up the mountain – massive crash – all ok but the
Holden was badly damaged.
Back
to the van for lunch and change of clothes. Tshirts during the day as the sun
is quite hot but left the jeans on as everyone is getting burnt. Met up with
the boys in the motorhome as they were watching the Development Series race on
the TV while they had lunch. Wandered over to the Chase to watch the Top 10
shootout. Lowndes made it out for the shootout but Tander didn’t and his car
was so bad that they won’t even be in the big race tomorrow. Reynolds car got
fixed and was out this morning for the practice session. We all placed our bets
between us, I went for Winterbottom, McLaughlin, Coulthard but we all forgot
about Shane Van Gisbergen. He went like lightning. They had resurfaced the
track and the track record was broken a few times.
Lexi
Underwood went for a helicopter joy ride and took a great photo.
After
tea at Lou’s – he did lasagna – we went for another walk along the pits and a
lot of garages were still hard at work. Wandered back up Conrod to the Chase to
check out where to sit tomorrow. Last year any tarps left on the ground were
taken away overnight. No tarps but there are a few chairs left out and lots of
painted spots on the grass. Picked out a couple of spots and I will ring the boys
to wake them up in the morning.
Off
for a hot shower and bed as it is 5am start for work tomorrow!!
