Sun, 5th July, 2015 ‘Waanyarra’, Dunolly State Forest

8am 10 degrees in the van before the heater goes on. 9am it was only 3.7 degrees outside so not sure if we want to venture outside yet.

I made some more yummy pumpkin soup which warmed up the van too.

After a cuppa Steve headed off detecting again. I found a spot in the sun and enjoyed my book.

Had yummy soup for lunch. Nice sunny day but the breeze is still biting. Steve didn’t find any gold so he is over this spot – he has walked a lot of areas and he has only found gold behind the campsite – Go figure!!

Started packing up as we will head off in the morning, down the road to Laanecoorie. This is just a small portion of Steve’s junk collection and his 1.3 grams of gold.

He also found a piece of quartz that was on the verge of turning into a crystal. You can see through in some parts.

We then went for a drive to find the wells David said he saw. There are so many tracks but we had the map and followed a track along the edge of the railway line that was built in 1888 from Dunolly to Inglewood. Climbed up a hill we think was Granite Hill according to the map where there was supposed to be a chimney but we didn’t find it. Eventually came down to Specimen Point mine and Canadian Reef. Not sure why this was built up with rocks etc. It is not the round shape of a puddler and it is huge.

At the other end was a brick wall platform.

Climbed up onto the built up wall around the dam, looking back to the first picture.

The dam which would have been dug out in the next wave of prospectors, probably 1950s.

Found the wells. Not sure when they were formed but we think early 1900s.

Steve then found where they would have had the stamper to crush all the quartz.

Further over was a shaft that was about 30 foot deep now.

Hung over the side to get photos of the walls and the bottom.

Back to the van for a cuppa and then start packing up. Got the fire going as it is going to be cool again tonight as the sky is lovely and clear.
