Rain
started during the night and still drizzling this morning. Some thunder as big
dark clouds came over but it moved on quickly.
Gave
Steve a haircut then worked on my blog. Steve checked the truck over and
changed the filters. Put dinner in the Ecopot.
After
a cuppa in the arvo we drove towards Armadale to find an Elizabethan Village
mentioned in the tourist information. Down the Tonkin Highway onto the Albany
Highway though Kelmscott where I saw a sign stating it was established in 1830.
Into
Armadale and followed the signs to the Village along the hillside roads. Found
the carpark – my car is here, well my name is on the numberplate!!
The
Village was built in the 1970s by Leo Fowler who wanted to capture an English
village in the 1600s. Along with the Hotel there was two homes depicting
William Shakespeare’s birthplace and Anne Hathaway’s cottage (they are now
B&Bs), fully furnished as they would have been in the 1600s. Walked up through the covered walked to the
main area – Cobweb’s Restaurant with the Village Green opposite. ‘No thongs’
sign at the door so we didn’t go in.
The
Last Drop Brewery was a later addition (1992).
Lots
of flowering Lantana here.
Back
into town to check out the Pioneer Village – replica of 1880s early settlers’
village. Again it was built as a tourist attraction years ago (not sure when).
Luckily the buildings have been kept and slowly shops are moving into the
village and an Independent School has taken over one whole end (1981). What an
unique setting for classrooms in each of the little houses.
A
lady tending the roses said the Cinema was great but it has closed now.
A
lot of the houses in the area are old English style.
This
is Armadale House.
The
Info Centre had closed at 4pm. There are a couple of museums here too and the
Armadale Outpost Telegraph Centre but we were too late.
Back
home along the highway and only had one slow section of traffic.
Lovely
evening. Rang Joc and John for a chat then Roz. Tried Janet but no answer
there.
