Tues, 2nd August, 2022 Barn Hill Station Stay, south of Broome, WA

7am 16 degrees, got down to 14. We can hear the waves rolling in and out from here and there are plenty of birds about. Sounds like some baby corellas in the powered section.

We put on our boots and headed out to the gate near the homestead to walk up to Barn Hill. There was a sign on the gate but no direction as to which way to go. Footprints went both ways along the fence line so we headed down the main track till we nearly reached the next gate and saw a track heading into the bush.

We made our way through and eventually came to the east side of the hill and climbed up. Looking across to Church Hill.

Great view of the straight road in from here.

The cairn was left by Alexander Forrest in 1879 during his expedition of the Kimberleys.

Great 360 degree view from up here.

Looking down the west side we could see a track heading down. Made our way through the trees to it then down the hill. We followed it to a creek which took us to the fence line track at the northern end of the camping area. Looking back up to Barn Hill.

In a gully beside the fence was a pile of old tyres that used to mark the camp sites - now used as erosion control.

Back to the gate and to the camper for a cuppa. The tide is coming in so we headed down to check out the rock pool. It was perfect though a bit chilly when I first got in.

The waves are starting to crash onto the rocks and then the water flows into the pool.

Managed to get a photo of one of the little fish as the water is so clear.

Steve got in too.

As the tide got higher the water rolled over the top and the pool got deeper.

I got out as the tide was nearly rolling over the top of the rocks making lovely little waterfalls. Steve stayed in.

The pool has nearly disappeared.

We walked back up to the red sand cliffs and found a hole.

Back to the camp area where we found some ‘private’ shelters. I think people have been coming here every year for a long time.

We don’t find the Indian Ocean water as salty as the Pacific but I did get a bit itchy later yesterday so we decided to have a rinse off today in the roofless amenities block.

Had lunch and read our books for a while. Walked back to the northern beach.

A very happy lady was making her way back to camp with her big prize, a Golden Trevally. Yesterday all the fisherman were just catching Long Toms so this is a real treat and she was happy to have me take her photo. Maybe we should get out the fishing rods! She was using a bit of prawn on a little hook.

Checked on the pool as the tide is going out. Still a bit full at the moment.

As we walked along we spotted some dolphins working their way along the rocks.

Walked back up the steps and chatted with a couple parked beside one of the gazebos. They paid a far bit more for the spot. The lady mentioned she was going to join others for a game of Dice in 15 minutes so we headed off so I could join them.

There are 17 of us and we paid $1 which the organiser changed into 5 x 20 cent pieces. There are 4 die which had a L, R, K or C on the faces. There are two sets of die to make it go a bit faster. On your turn if you throw an L you pass one coin to the left, R to the right, K you get to keep the coin and C means you put a coin in the centre (kitty). At one point I had 6 coins then I got down to only 1 but then my neighbour had to pass me 3 so I was good again till I threw 2 R and 1 L so I was down to 1 coin again. If you only have 3 coins left then you only throw 3 die. Eventually as more coins go in the Centre (kitty) it gets down to only one coin in play. A lady had the last one and if she threw a C then she got all the money. She did so made a $16 profit. It was great fun with lots of laughter and complaining when you lost your coins! Will get some dice and we will play this at home or where we have a group of people.

The game finished just in time to meet Steve at the stairs for the sunset. Chatted with the couple from Mackay again and another couple from Newcastle who are on their way across to Cairns and then up Cape York so they asked Steve some questions.

No cloud tonight but we were treated to watching the dolphins rounding up some dinner off the rocks. I managed to get a fin or two.

They came around to the beach and worked their way along it.

The sky became so blue then the after sun glow arrived.

A bit of moon appeared too at the top of the photo.

Another perfect day in paradise. I can see why people keep coming back here as it has a nice community feel to it and obviously the fishing can be good and the sunsets are magnificent.

Back to the camper for dinner.
