15.5 degree min, still windy but the sky is now clear and blue.
Leisurely breakfast then we went for a wander - the wind is trying to blow us over. Nice mural made to look like a framed painting.
Good history signs to read. Some machinery on the old garage site.
The sun dial was correct except for daylight saving of course.
Nice tables outside the Georgetown Hotel.
Here’s a walk for the energetic.
World record in 1906 - mural needs fixing up.
Unfortunately a lot of the buildings no longer exist but it is interesting to read the history.
Back to the Memorial Park and our camper.
Back on the highway and continued southward. A nicer day for looking across the fields.
At Gulnare we turned onto the Goyder Highway and wind through grass covered hills with the Morgan-Wyalla pipeline beside the road.
Snapped a shot of the Bundaleer Reservoir as we rose up a hill.
Back to the grain fields again with a line of wind turbines on the hill further over. They aren’t turning either.
Turned up RM Williams Way and into Spaulding for a cuppa at Centenary Park (town established in 1876). Some nice buildings and information in the shelter shed.
Continued on and back onto the Goyder Highway towards Burra. Spotted an old bridge - ?part of the Aquaduct that was used before the pipeline was installed. Just spotted the old channel system hiding in the grass.
Up through the hills to the wind farm that isn’t turning - no correction, one is just turning! Over 500m elevation now.
This house was used for the cover of the Midnight Oil ‘Diesel and Dust’ album according to Wikicamps.
Into Burra - I had marked this place to explore when we drove through here last year. Lots of history. The town is split in two by the mine.
Through North Burra then passed the mine turn off and around the edge of the hill to Burra which has a weir over Burra Creek on the other side. We parked and wandered back to the Information Centre. You can pay $35 each for a heritage pass key so you can have access into the old buildings and 11 museums but there is plenty of other information boards as well. The Railway Museum was open and run by volunteers and the other mine museum, Bon Accord, is run by the National Trust. We decided to just walk and see what we can. The lady gave us a good map and suggested two areas for free camping out of town and said that the Yacht Regatta is on tomorrow - like our old raft regattas so that should be fun to watch.
Spotted a history sign as we headed back to the truck then took a couple of photos of the buildings here.
Drove back passed the tall chimney and zoomed in on the chap at the top.
Into North Burra and along to the old railway station. Read the info outside then walked to the other end. Looks a lot like the old photo.
They hire out the room too which is nice. Lots of information in here too and some about the fossils found at Redbanks where we are staying tonight. Very interesting and the volunteers have done an amazing job restoring it. Dropped some money in the donation box.
They have restored a carriage too and the kitchen - bit different from the little kiosk in the trains now.
Back out and down to the Bon Accord Hotel with the coach house (deluxe accommodation) around the back with powered sites for travellers too. Lots of lovely homes around here.
Back to North Burra and the Royal Exchange Hotel at the intersection (est c1850).
Back to the chimney and mine area for lunch and to explore.
Love the Burra photos. We have been there many times over many years. Did you go to Burra Gorge at Worlds End free camping area, it is a beautiul area.
