Sat, 8th Apr, 2017 Centennial Park RV Stop, Kalgoorlie to Gavin & Tonia’s, Kalgoorlie, WA (Malcolm racing at V8s Tassie)

The sky has cleared which is a relief as I need to do the washing. Rang Mum and Dad for a chat then we headed off to Gavin and Tonia’s place.

We had just parked at the front of the house when Tonia drove in. Gavin had to go to work unfortunately but they had Fox Sport and she invited us in to watch. Missed Malcolm’s first outing, which was his qualifying, as with the time change that was at 8.35am here.

Got the washing machine going too – so nice to have a big machine to do it all in one hit.

As we started to watch the broadcast down came the rain in Tassie. Glad we weren’t there this year!! Malcolm qualified in 6th position and is with lots of different cars. He and another chap were the only open wheelers with no roof which wasn’t a good idea now it was raining. They headed out for their first race and he took off well and got to 3rd place but then a bigger engine car zoomed by him. Unfortunately as it was so wet and slippery a car crashed and they had to return to the start to wait for a restart. Then the rain started again and poor Mal was sitting in the rain and we all commented he needed an umbrella!! I took photos and videos of the broadcast and he got a lot of TV coverage which was fabulous. The race was shortened due to the red flag and time constraints so they only got 2 full laps for that race – what a shame.

The V8s came out for qualifying in the rain too which was a bit hair raising but they got through it ok.

John Beal rang for a chat and to seek Steve’s gasfitting advice. They are both ok and might go up to Cairns in winter which would be lovely.

The main V8 race started with lots of water on the track and they managed one lap before a huge crash on the straight down to the hairpin took out 12 cars!! In the end there was only time for 1 more lap before broadcast time finished and it was getting too dark anycase.

We felt cold watching cold wet Tassie on TV and it was a cool day here anycase. Gavin eventually made it home from work – big job on. Joined them for dinner and lots of chatting.

Very cool when we headed back to the van for our shower.
