Sat, 23rd Apr, 2016 Centennial Park RV Stop, Kalgoorlie to Gavin & Tonya’s, Kalgoorlie, WA (Super Pit blast)

7am 17 degrees and a cold wind. Gavin stopped by for a chat. We will head over to his place this afternoon and park beside the house.

Headed into town to get the groceries etc. Checked in at the Info Centre for more brochures etc. She said there was to be a blast in the Super Pit at 1pm. Ducked back to the van for lunch then headed up to the lookout.

We got there at 12.45 – nothing happening down below. They are going to blast the section we saw last night.

Zoomed in on the old mine shaft openings.

Looks like they are preparing another section to blast too.

I just took this photo and commented that I will take a video then the blast went off. There was no warning sirens and they were 5 minutes early. We didn’t feel any vibration but the sonic boom was amazing. I did get it on the video too.

I was just complaining about them being early when another blast went off underneath us.

When the dust cleared the flat area was now a huge pile.

After a while a lonely ute drove down the road and checked all was ok. You can see how high the pile of dirt is now compared to the ute.

Then slowly the trucks started down to start work again.

Checked out the machinery on display. Certainly are big.

More trucks headed down and then the endloaders started working too. Steve counted 4 scoops per truck. Amazing to think that only a golfball size of gold is retrieved from every 6 big truckloads of dirt.

Picked up the van and topped up the water etc then headed over the Gavin’s house. Our camp for the night. They have a lovely home.

Met Tonya and her mother, Wendy (visiting from Melbourne) and their three kids. It was the youngest’s birthday yesterday so she was full of beans about her presents. Chatted then followed them into town for dinner at one of the pubs. It was busy out tonight but we eventually found a nice spot and had a great dinner.

The aerial photos of the Super Pit out of the tourist brochures.

The sky is lovely and clear as we head into the van for the night.
