7.30am
24 degrees and cloudy – lovely temperature. Headed back up the road to the
turnoff. Springdale Road heads to Hopetoun from here but it is closed due to
the causeway damaged. The two rivers met further upstream.
Back
to the highway where we got warm enough to put on the air-conditioner. I also
put my shades on the window as my left arm is getting a lot darker than my
right!! Up and down the hills, across the Young and Lort Rivers – didn’t look
like much but they flow into Stokes Inlet.
Passed
Stokes Inlet turnoff (another National Park) – another camp area to check on
our way back. There is a sign ‘water over road’ so probably better to do it later!!
Turned
off and headed down the road to Quagi Beach. A paddock is now a lake and it
even had black swans. The road is lined with big pine trees – very pretty.
Onto
dirt road and into the Shaster Nature Reserve. Now the road is lined with big
Tennis Ball Banksia trees. Camping bays in the bush – very neat and tidy.
Passed a few other caravans parked up as we did out lap to choose our spot.
Chose a drive through one as we are only staying the night and don’t need to
unhook.
Made
a cuppa and sat in the shade listening to all the birds and bees. The sun is
out and it is 32.5 degrees in the van so opened all the windows and vents –
that the first time I think since we left the western coastline.
One
bird hopped on the Tennis Ball Banksia flower and fed but I didn’t have my
camera!!
Grabbed
the camera and went for our walk to the beach. The kids have been decorating
the fences with shells.
Narrow
track down the dune to the beach – more decorating – good use of the beach
rubbish.
High
dunes on each side and lots of sea grass washed up on the beach.
Walked
around the beach to the rocks on the west end and chatted with a couple
fishing. Only little ones. Nice rock pool on top.
There
are lines of black rocks.
Continued
further west over the rocks and found more rocks.
Steve found a couple of sea
urchin things and we are finding lots of pretty little shells.
Looking
back to Quagi Beach then around to the west.
The
black rock is sparkling in the sunlight – must have lots of mika.
There
is a lifesaving ring and three anchors for fishermen on these rocks – must be a
good spot for salmon. They even test the anchors regularly – safety first.
Zoomed
in on Red Island.
Steve
reckons this rock looks like a crocodile’s mouth. Well!!
Climbed
over some more rocks and there were more rocks.
A
4WD track comes down to this fishing spot so we followed it back. Certainly has
warmed up today – maybe March should be the last month of summer now!!
Lots
of busy bees collecting pollen. We had passed a lot of bee hives just before
entering the Nature Reserve.
Steve
went for a wander and chatted with a couple from Esperance. They said top temp
of 35 today and tomorrow with maybe some rain tonight then cooling off on
Saturday. It is 37.7 degrees in van at 2.30pm and still as the trees block the
sea breeze – not that we are complaining. They gave him some info about free
camps etc around Esperance which is handy.
Quiet
afternoon reading and blogging as clouds came over which cooled it off a bit,
back to 32 degrees at 4pm.
Very
still and heavier clouds hanging over us. Walked down to the beach then to the
left to check out a big lump in the shallows. Turned out to be a boat hull –
didn’t take my camera. Lots of smelly kelp and grass this side and hardly any
shells compared to the other side of the beach. Found a thong and length of
rope which we added to the fence decorations.
It
is lovely here listening to the birds chirp and sing their songs – one has a
real sing-song call.
Lovely
warm night – all the windows still open.
