Fri, 18th Mar, 2016 Stokes Bay Campground to Emu Bay Campground, Kangaroo Island (Kingscote)

16 degrees at 8am. Strong gusty wind through the night. Rick got up to take down his awning in the middle of the night and just as he started to roll it up the wind stopped – how lucky he was. We left ours out and it was all ok in the morning.

Texted Jodie for her birthday.  Clouds starting to come over again then the pitter patter of rain on the roof as the wind picked up again.

Packed up and headed back up the hill and down to the main road then turned east towards Kingscote. Turned north before Kingscote and headed to Emu Bay. Missed the campground turnoff so did a block around the nice holiday homes. Lovely green grass along the front. Four kilometre white beach here.

The jetty was built in 1916 and, until the early 1930s, was used for the shipping of grain, stock and merchandise.

Nice level camp area.

With a view across the grass to the bay and the jetty.

After lunch drove into Kingscote to get some fuel and groceries and have a look around. Kingscote is South Australia’s First Settlement.

Went down to the jetty. Too cold and windy to go fishing though.

Doesn’t look so nice when it is cold and overcast – looking over Western Cove.

Drove around Reeves Point which was the site of the First Settlement – will come back and check that out tomorrow. Around to a new boat ramp at Bay of Shoals – fisherman have to pay to use it to recoup the cost of building the boat ramp. View around from the Bay back to Reeves Point.

At the town jetty they feed the pelicans at 5pm - these guys are getting ready to head over there!!

Back into town for a walk around. Nice seal on the corner.

History plaques on the buildings.

Great paint job.

Kingscote was originally called Queenscliffe, hence the name of the hotel. The Queenscliffe Family Hotel was the first hotel on K.I. Built in 1883, it was also used as the first Council Chambers and the doctor’s surgery. The second storey was added in 1911. Someone had told Steve it had a lovely timber staircase so we went in for a look. Very similar to the one in Millaa house. Nice lead lighting on the games rooms doors.

Potter home built in 1910.

Back to the van for cuppa to warm us up. Later we went for a walk to the jetty – too cold to fish.

Put the big blanket on the bed – will have to dig out the flannelette sheets too!!

Rang Kaylene and Rick for a chat.
