29
degrees and overcast this morning. Rick, Leanne & I headed to the shops to
get fuel, gas and groceries leaving Steve to pack up and take down the washing.
Headed
off down the highway to Fleurieu Peninsula. Sky improving as we headed south.
The new air bags seem to be doing the job. Nice drive through the rolling
pastures.
The
grapevines are starting to brown off.
Lots
of olive trees along the way.
Interesting
building.
Rolling
hills.
Lots
of things to come back and check out later – a temple near Aldinga Bay.
Over
Myponga Reservoir.
A
bit greener down here near Wattle Flat – there is a Wattle Flat near Bathurst
too.
Looking
down on Yankalilla.
Right
down on the coast in Yankalilla Bay.
Zoomed
in on the bluff in the distance.
Turned
off the main road and headed down to Rapid Bay.
Rapid
Bay’s long jetty that signs have been telling us cost $3.9 million to build.
Pulled
into the Council van park and found a spot on the grass. Was cooler here than
on the sandy area next to the beach. Only having the night as we are on the
ferry tomorrow.
Nice
view across to the bluff which is the one I took a photo of before and out to
the water and jetty.
Zoomed
in on the cave under the bluff.
Down
to the jetty end.
BHP
had a quarry for limestone here.
Walked
down to the jetty. The old one definitely needed replacing.
Great
view back up the coast then around over the van park.
Lovely
butterflies were flittering about.
Walked
up the hill to the houses. Doesn’t look like anyone is using them.
Found some info explaining the quarry etc.
Found some info explaining the quarry etc.
The
creek that Colonel Light used to get fresh water when he landed here.
Near
the van park was plaques about Matthew Flinders and Colonel Light when he
inscribed his name on a rock here when he surveyed the land.
A
replica anchor of the ‘Rapid’.
Walked
up the hill to the little village. Apparently the other houses on the other
side were part of the BHP set up and are now just shells and not fit for living
in. What a shame.
Back
to our vans for a drink as the wind started to pick up. Dropped down our
awnings once the sun set. 22 degrees at 7pm.
Rang
Malcolm to see how he went in Winton – not good – he selected two gears at once
and the gearbox blew apart.
Windy
night but all good.
