Tues, 10th Oct, 2017 Yalgoo Caravan Park, WA

7.45am 16 degrees, clear sky, breezy. But it didn’t take long for the strong wind to come up again. As they say “WA – windy always”.

Quiet morning sorting a few things – Steve enjoying having lots of hot water for the washing up!!

Clouds started coming over as we headed off to explore. Jokers Tunnel, named after the Joker mining syndicate, is a 100 metre tunnel through the hill, halfway up the hill. Nice view from up here over a lake but it isn’t on our map.

The crazy boys.

Some information about the tunnel.

We have our torches and will keep a good eye out for snakes!!

Photo time before heading in.

Had to duck as we entered then it became full height.

A tunnel off to the side – maybe they were following a vein.

Using the flash then just Steve’s torch.

Sandy at the entrance trying to see her photos on her Ipad.

I spotted a bolt hanging from the ceiling – might have held a light.

A little bat was also hanging from the ceiling. Ended up seeing three of them and NO snakes which was good.

Made it to the other end – a lot lower this side to get out.

Back in again to walk back to our trucks.

Lots of yellow rock and quartz but no gold.

Heading back to town Mr Goanna wandered in front of us.

Turned off just before the town sign to check out the old railway water tank. Another sign we can barely read but I made out “This unusual stone and iron water tower was built in 1900 and connected to 1.98 million gallon dam complex one kilometre to the north. Maybe that was the dam we saw.

Where the railway line would have been.

The town sign on the east side.

Drove by the old railway building which is now the town’s Sporting Complex. There have races here around Anzac Day and on the weekend just past they had the Emu Races – a fun time for kids to dress up as if they are riding emus etc.

The west side sign.

Back past the van park.

Up a dirt road to the water tanks and lookout.

We could just read the info board.

A willy willy in the distance.

Back to the vans for a late lunch then into the camp kitchen for an afternoon of games. The wind was cold and still blowing strong but the boys managed to cook our tea on the BBQ and Sandy and I had salads etc. I made some big pumpkin scones to have with it.

Finished with more games, port and yummy brownies. Great night though we had to remember to be quieter than our usual selves as we were in the park!!
