Sat, 11th July, 2015 Butts Reserve Camping Area, Mt Tarrengower, Maldon

8am 13 degrees in van and 8 degrees out. Rain on and off all night. Headed into town to watch the historic Victorian Goldfields Railway steam train head towards Castlemaine. The chap at the Info Centre said to park where it crosses the main road. Unfortunately the rain decided to start again but I managed to get a couple of photos and a video of it under my umbrella.

Drove down the road and found the dredge dragline. I saw a brochure about it at the Info Centre so will have to get one and find out about it.

Drove back through town and up Anzac Hill. Will have to come back on a nicer day for photos as the rain is getting heavier now. Followed the dirt road around to Mt Tarrengower Lookout. It was completely covered in cloud so no view today. There are information boards here to will have to come back and check it out on a clear day.

Drove down the bitumen road that is used for Hill Climb in March. It is one of the oldest surviving Hill Climbs in Australia and the longest – being 1.5km long. Read in the brochure that where we are camped is a natural amphitheater used for larger events of the Annual Folk Festival which is held in November.

Picked up a brochure from the info centre about the dredge. Back to the van for lunch. The water is flowing over the ground. 15 degrees in the van and only 6.5 outside. Put the genie and heater on and enjoyed yummy pumpkin soup watching the V8s broadcast in 21 degrees. Great to get the whole afternoon instead of just a race. Ian texted he is in Townsville and Kaylene said that Emma had one tickets to it too. Looks like a nice sunny day there. The rain has stopped and it is only 5.5 degrees outside at 2.30pm.

Great race. Got a text from Lou that he made it home in time to watch the race. Tried to ring him but he had to head out for the Show Ball so will talk to him tomorrow night.

The gold dredge belonged to Mr Heywood and he first began working the site at Porcupine Flat in 1958. He worked it till 1978.

Will be 1 degree overnight and only 10 tomorrow – glad we have the V8s to entertain us for the weekend.
