Another cold night - bit hard to take after the heat and humidity of Cairns! 11 degrees min, clear sky. The sun is up early too, 5am which wakes me up but I was able to get back to sleep.
Stayed in the camper with the windows closed and did some more cross-stitching and Steve read his book. After morning tea we ventured outside and chatted with Leo and Jenny as they packed up and headed off towards Esperance.
After lunch we packed up and headed through town and out through Boulder for a change. It is so nice they restored a lot of the old façades on the buildings after the earthquake damaged so many. Up to the Super Pit Lookout which has moved since we visited here in April. They have created a new one further around and the area of the old one has been slowly excavated.
All the machinery on display has gone too - only the big bucket is here. There is a big open area so maybe they are bringing it back here later on.
The view isn’t as good as before - we could see right down into the pit but we are fortunate to be able to come up to the lookout any case.
Great aerial view on the info hut wall.
Passed an old pub then the tourist ‘tram’ came by.
Onto the Goldfields Highway and headed south. Tom and Sandy will meet us in Norseman in a few days time. At the T-intersection we turned left to Kambalda East to have a cuppa at Red Hill Lookout. We came here 9 years ago when we first came to WA in 2016. The sign as we turned to go up the hill said ’1st gold mine closed in 1907’.
Oops - I forgot to lock the fridge and the ice cream has made a nice puddle on the mat. Only lost a quarter of it and the other frozen stuff was fine. Steve gave the mat a wash while I packed everything away and made our cuppas.
Nice view from up here over Lake Lefroy which has a channel of water in it. Tom used to do land-yacht racing here.
Walked down to the main lookout and watched the mine trucks working below us. One of the dump trucks disappeared into the mound of grey rock near where a front-end loaded was loading a big truck. Not sure what they are mining there but most are either gold or nickel.
Zoomed in on different sections.
Drove back down and around the housing area - nestled on the hillside. Unfortunately a lot aren’t well kept.
Back to the intersection and on to Kambalda West. The land yachts sculpture. There is an art gallery and museum here which we checked out previously.
Into the town centre - Woolies, BWS etc, sports ground etc and a 48hr RV Rest Area which will be our home tonight.
Time for a drink and a few games of Skipbo to get some practice before Tom & Sandy join us. We play girls vs boys in pairs with them - great fun and a bit competitive too!
Quiet evening once everyone went home from the playground area.
