Min of 11.1 degrees, overcast again with a shower of rain.
Continued east on the Roe Plain. We will climb onto the Hampton Tableland via the Eucla Pass.
Turned into Eucla but at the east end. Eucla had a population of over 100 in the early 1900s and was the busiest Telegraph Station in Australia excluding the capital cities. The Ecula Telegraph Station opened in 1877 and helped link WA with the rest of Australia and the world. They would send 11,000 messages annually by Morse Code (which was only invented by Samuel Morse 33 years before). Tom & Sandy had been to the Museum so we decided to continue on after a photo of the Southern Ocean of course.
Dark clouds to the north-east with blue sky to the south. 12 km to go to the WA/SA border. We have covered a lot of roads in WA over the past years - still a couple we haven’t been on.
Into SA. Clocks go forward another half hour then another hour for daylight saving! Late cuppa!
No quarantine stop here for us going east, it is before Ceduna. Pulled into the roadhouse to play another hole of golf and a photo with the Border Kangaroo under very dark clouds.
Continued eastward on the Nullarbor Plain. The old Nullarbor Road is still visible and goes away from the coast. We went along it for a bit the first visit when we went up to the old Koonalda Homestead. Might see a kangaroo but probably won’t see the other two.
Pulled off at 13km Peg Lookout. Julie (from Kalgoorlie 72hr) was there too with her New Age ‘Gecko’ van. I chatted to her as we checked out the rock cairn.
View back to WA.
Dark and gloomy to the north but blue sky to the south. View to the east.
Continued eastward - low shrubs everywhere. They could call this the treeless plain too.
I had phone reception most of the way from Norseman. Get into SA and there is none.
Turned off at 52 Peg Lookout - lots of travellers here. We parked well back and walked over towards the edge. Steve - don’t do it.
View to east, down then west.
Wandered along. Selfie time. Still very windy and cool. Max of 20 degrees.
Decided to move to this camp spot - even further back from the edge.
Set up then went back for a few photos.
After our late lunch (midday WA but it is now 1.45pm SA time) we went a wander east along the track. A few ‘cracks’ which we kept clear of - joys of a camera, I can zoom in.
Back to camp for a cuppa then a game of dice - too windy for cards. We all won 1 game each.
Getting colder at 6.45pm with the sun still up but we went inside to cook dinner - too cold to stay outside.
At 8.15pm - nice colours as the sun started to set.
Eventually when we got phone service again Sandy sent me this photo.
Unfortunately the cloud band blocked the actual sun set. The wind is still rocking the camper.
