Tues, 29th Oct, 2024 Bush camp at Flat Rock on Holland Track, east of Hyden to Bush camp, old townsite of Wogolin, WA (No. 1 & 2 Rabbit Proof Fences, Hyden etc)

Min 15 degrees but up to 25 by 7.30am so all good. Still windy with clear blue sky.

Pumped up the tyres and back to the main bitumen road and headed to Hyden. Stopped at the rest area to check out the info about the No. 1 Rabbit Proof Fence that we cross here (over a grid). We have been to the southern end of it at Preservation Bay and the north end near Port Hedland. Not sure what that other line of fence that we went around was for.

A tribute plaque to the chap who instigated this road - Hyden to Norseman.

The fence was further along the road so I walked down for a photo. Still in use for dog baits etc. The grain fields start west of the fence.

Continued on. Nice view over a field down to a salt lake and further over is Lake Carmody.

Pulled off for a big bit of machinery.

Slowed down for a Bob-tail lizard who was slowly crossing the road. Turned off onto Sharps Road (gravel) then onto Graham Rock Road when we met a salt lake.

Wiggled our way through a narrow treed track to Graham Rock. Parked then a short walk to the base of the rock.

This is only a small section of the rock and the ‘dam’ is over on the left.

We went over to the wall which was built around a gnamma hole. Looks like the water flows down the rock from maybe another hole up higher. We didn’t bother walking up.

Nice smooth boulders. I wonder how they were worn into that shape by just sitting there.

Back to the camper for a cuppa then we headed back out and continued along the Graham Rock Road till we met the Brookton Highway. Continuing through the grain fields towards Hyden.

Hyden Rock comes into view and you can just make out the water catching wall on it too. This is where Wave Rock is which we explored in 2017.

Into Hyden (est 1922). We had seen the Sculpture Park previously but there are new cutouts which look like they light up at night (solar panel on top of each pole). There were lots of them going along the edge of the rail line. These are just a few. Would be interesting to see them at night.

The railway area has been done up too. The old cottages are under a covered area and have been decorated with old items. A locked glass door protects the stuff inside.

Further along was a big rock with new plaque for the Mouritz family.

We have visited most of these towns but we are taking a different route so I can mark off new roads in my map book. Continued on and into Karlgarin to check out a mural. Can’t remember if we saw this before.

Out the other road to the display for the town and Malleefowls. We have seen a lot of the ‘rocks’ around this area. We have read all the history info in town last visit.

Continued on to Kondinin that we had visited before but we hadn’t gone out to the lake which is on the west side of town. Across the causeway (right & left views) passing the old well and info boards that we check on the way back.

Onto a track out to the lake to have lunch.

Wide open flat and very still lake. Not sure how deep it is but they water ski on it. Quite hot now, no breeze.

Back to the info boards at the causeway.

Across the causeway to Condinin Well replica (spelt with the C not the K of the town). The well is further over.

Across the road is the pioneer cemetery (1910-1950).

Back into Kondinin then northward to check out some sculptures that are marked on Wikicamps. Interesting but not amazing.

Unfortunately I didn’t walk around to the big one in the lake and as we drove off I saw that it was very good. It was an arched arm and shoulders of a swimmer. Missed the photo.

Continued on to the turn off and headed down to Kulin. Famous for the Tin Horse Trail that I took lots of photos of last time. Forgot that I hadn’t done this section and missed a few horses!! Got the big one to start and the town sign.

Cheaper fuel here ($1.77/L) so filled up. There is a big water park that we being built when we last visited and they have a great RV area here too. Met Mark & Heidi here.

Onto another road we haven’t travelled over and then turned onto the Rabbit Proof Fence Road (north of Dundinin) and pulled into the historic townsite area of Wogolin. Set up for the night. Opened up all the windows as it is 37 degrees in the camper and the sun is beating in through the bare trees.

Had a cuppa then wandered over to read the signs about the No. 2 fence and Wogolin. The picnic table is disappearing into the grass. They need the fence back again as there is rabbit droppings everywhere!

The flies are still very friendly!! Relaxing afternoon reading with our fans on. Wendy sent a photo of her mum, Heather, celebrating her 91st birthday. So lovely.

Only a few cars drove by. All quiet in the evening till about 9pm when the wind picked up but the sky remained clear.
