Mon, 15th Feb, 2016 Queen Victoria Jubilee Park, Williamstown, SA to Port Parham foreshore, SA

Cold morning 17 degrees, mist and cloudy. Back into jeans and jumper. Programmed ‘Kate’ to take us back to the Towbar shop as we need the adaptor pin to go with the new hitch. Down another road we hadn’t travelled yet past another reservoir, Millbrook Reservoir. This one has water.

‘Kate’ took us around top of North Adelaide beside the parks then down the west side to Edwardstown. Picked up the adaptor pin and headed off to get fuel and gas. Checked out Rays Outdoors for cheap chairs for the V8s but got a drink bag for Steve to go detecting. Used the Rays Rewards credit so it only cost us 70 cents!!

Back around to Mitcham to check out the Post Office as I will need postal votes to be sent for the local election and Steve is going to order air bags to support our truck’s springs. Stopped at a caravan shop to ask about fridge vents as he wants to put in a bigger one to help cope in hot weather. They also had the Ice-O Cube evaporator fan that we had been looking out. There is a big caravan expo coming up at the showgrounds and we would have got good discounts there. When I said that we can’t attend he discounted our purchases any case – nice chap.

Back up to Adelaide parks.

Then along the edge past where they are getting ready for Clipsal.

Passed some lovely churches, on opposite corners of the intersection. Will do a walk around town with Leanne later.

Climbed up the hills again via another road and stopped to check out the view from over the water treatment plant near Houghton. Looking over Port Adelaide, airport and salt lakes area.

Near where Steve goes detecting we saw an emu running along the fence line on the roadside. Hope he doesn’t head onto the road. Back to the van to pack up. Steve put the new adaptor pin in and we connected up the van using the new towbar hitch. Left the old one for whoever wants it. Said bye to Malcolm and Dani, lovely couple who manager the park.

Programmed ‘Kate’ and off we headed towards Gawler through the rolling hills. Will be nice to see this area when it is green.

Down a steep descent into Gawler then towards the coast (further up the Gulf St Vincent) to Two Wells. Onto the main highway for a while past some unusual sculptures. They were originally developed as a protest against the waste facilities nearby and have now become a tourist attraction. Only got one photo, will have to get the others when we head back to Adelaide.

Passed Dublin – didn’t realise we had gone overseas!! Turned off to Port Parham. Open salty areas along the way.

The main road is lined with holiday fishing shacks and houses. To the northern end of the foreshore to find the free camp and laughed as we saw heaps of other vans and motorhomes. We don’t like caravan parks because you are all in lines but it was just the same here – but at least free. Everyone is friendly and offered advice about where to park. One couple were from Townsville. Decided on a centre one for the night and maybe someone will pull out tomorrow so we can put out the awning etc.

Grabbed a drink and wandered down to the beach – where’s the water and the sand. Will get good exercise here as it is a 2km hike to catch a fish or crabs. The beach is covered with dead seagrass. Not too smelly – the rubbish bins are worse!!

That was low tide and the tide had turned and is heading back in.

Chatted with some people in the shelter shed. A young chap was getting ready to boil up his crabs. A map of where we are and one showing the military area.  The beacons show the military area’s boundary. This free camp is on the military land and people have been using it for the past 40 years, according to the ‘mayor’ who was busy filling everyone in on the history etc.

We went for a walk along the strip of sand between the piles of sea grass. One keen chap heading out to get some Blue Swimmer crabs.

Further down some horses getting their exercise and a chap was heading out to do some kite-boarding as the wind has picked up with the black clouds rolling in.

Walked back past the houses to check out the ‘Jinkers’ – modified Holdens etc that they use to tow their boats out over the sand to get into deep enough water. They leave them out there and can still drive back with the wheels under water as the engine etc is up high.

Chatted with more people – another couple from Townsville at the other end. Tide heading in.

Got dinner started then walked back to get the sunset photos. A low band of cloud is going to block the drop over the horizon but it still was a beautiful sunset.

The wind has picked up and dark clouds roll over us. Went out to the get the phone cable and the stars were twinkling between the clouds.
