Sat, 4th Feb, 2017 Betty’s Beach Campground, east of Albany, WA

Light rain early. Heavy dark clouds heading south east over us. Nice morning reading then another shower of rain after smoko.

The sky cleared a bit so wandered down to the beach and over the rocks looking for places to fish.

More rain then the sun came out after lunch. Headed over to Two Peoples Bay to try fishing there. Drove down onto the beach and around the bay. Stopped to chat with a guy fishing with his son but he was no help as he has just moved down here from Geraldton. His sister is a teacher at Trinity Beach School and his parent’s in law live in Maryborough. Everyone knows someone in Cairns.

Picked a spot where the sea grass wasn’t on the water’s edge and cast out.

The wind is chilly but it was nice in the sunshine. I got a few bites and when I pulled in my line I had a crab hanging onto my bait. He landed upside down so I grabbed my camera for proof that I caught something – or that it decided to hang onto my bait for a ride to the shore!! Flipped him over and he dropped the bait and headed back into the water.

No more bites so we packed up and headed further around but the beach is closed to protect the birds.

Back to the campground then back up the hill to the main track. Turned left and down the road 3km to turn off to Norman’s Campground. Only 4 spots here beside an inlet with private property beside the campground. An explanation about how the beaches got their names.

It is also a sanctuary for a Potoroo and the Noisy Scrub-Hen.

Walked up the hill alongside the inlet.

It is closed to the ocean.

On the top of the hill was an interesting looking building on the private property. (found out later - it was built by an architect from Denmark and had a big glass dome on top with an atrium under it. It was broken in a storm and hasn't been replaced. He sold it to the man who started Gull Petroleum.)

Lots of steps down to Norman’s Beach.

None of these hills have names except this big one - Mt Manypeaks. There is a town just up from where we turned down to here which is called Many Peaks.

With the cloud cover and no sea spray I can see the little islands better.

Looking back to Betty’s Beach, North and South Points.

All this area was burnt 2015 New Year’s Day after a fireworks on the beach set the area alight – even right down to the water’s edge. Someone told Steve that two people were killed in the fire – very sad.

Note sure if the water level is up or the trees are usually growing in the water.

Back to the carpark – wandered down to the water’s edge and chatted with a couple of the campers.

Home to the van for a cuppa beside the shed overlooking the bay. Sun then clouds then it started to spit so headed into the van for a game of Sequence – 4 games to none – poor Steve.

Went for a wander as lots of cars have been coming and going. A nice 6 foot python was slowing making its way across the road. All the backpackers came over for a look too.

He headed for a bush – the family in their camper beside the bush weren’t so sure about its choice of home!!

Back to the van for a drink and I checked the weather – more overcast days and possible showers though Monday is clear at Mt Barker so might do a drive up there.

Cool night.
