Thurs, 16th Aug, 2018 Wongai Camp, Cape Melville National Park to Bush camp, Barramundi Creek, Qld (4 years on the road)

Wow 4 years have passed so fast but we have seen so much and there is still so much to see and do.

Still windy and cloudy as we packed up. As we drove back out we stopped to check out some big trees that were bare of leaves but had beautiful flowers. Will have to look up Dad’s flower book.

Back across the fresh water creek.

We then headed up along the creek to where we would get our freshwater from when we camped here previously. Lots of different trees in here – so lush and cool.

We filled up our ‘washing machine’. Looking up to a big rock on top of the mountain.

Walked around to the other side of the huge boulder to where someone has put in a pipe to make filling up water containers easier.

Back down the track just as 3 other vehicles came across the creek. They are towing a boat and camper-trailer so might be a slower trip out.

We pulled over beside the saltwater creek that flows down to the beach. The track used to run right beside the creek edge when we came up and you could spot the crocs. Had a cuppa then a couple of more vehicles came by.

Caught up with all 5 vehicles at the first soft sand section. The last two then pulled over to let us pass as they were towing boats. Before the climb up the hill near the turn off to Ninian Bay there was an old gold mining spot. We pulled off to check it out so the others passed us again. Steve and Bob went for a wander while Margaret and I sat on a big log and chatted. They found some old workings and an old haul road but no gold!!

Continued on back over the lumps and bumps to Wakooka again and caught up with the other vehicles again. We had our lunch then continued on the new graded road back to Barramundi Creek.

Went through a light shower of rain – only enough to fill in the corrugations.

Set up camp where we had caught the barra on the way up.

Hung out the washing – well and truly tumbled over that road. Nice and hot here with the sun out.

Flicked our lures for a while. Steve yelled out from further along the lagoon that he had hooked a barra. Margaret and I wandered up to find him. He had noticed something working around the edges of the roots etc and realised it was little barra. He was using the shallow diver that he had got out of Hann Crossing. He hooked one then released it and then got a few more strikes. He was where a little creek flowed in so we all had a go. Margaret and I were using poppers. Margaret got a few strikes but no hook ups. I got a big smack near my feet and he spat the lure back at me.

I went back to get Bob so he didn’t miss out. As we came back Steve got another one so Bob got to let it go. Nothing big but we had fun.

Back to camp for a drink as a flock of Magpie Geese flew over us, honking their way to the lagoon on the other side of the causeway.

Warm night with lots of mozzies so put up the mozzie net. At least it isn’t blowing a gale here.
