8.9 degree min, clear sky and the wind is back.
Packed up and headed back along the track. Stopped at some old shafts for a look. Not deep ones. There was a makeshift camp over in the trees. Lots of rubbish everywhere.
Further along we checked out one with a very neat ‘brick’ wall.
Back onto the Kookynie-Yarri Road. Spotted some old telegraph/phone poles still with a wire between them.
Pulled off into an old homestead near the big mine of Porphry. It is all boarded up but there was a little sign near one of the doors - ‘Please respect our old home’.
Another telegraph/phone pole here by the remains of a building.
On the other side are 3 memorial plaques to two brothers, Ernest & Clarrie Balaam and Ernest’s son, Steve. Their ashes were scattered here. No other information unfortunately. I tried Googling it when I got back to phone reception but couldn't find out any more info.
Had a cuppa watching the mine trucks roar by probably heading down the Yarri Road to Kalgoorlie.
We turned eastward on the Yarri Road to the site of the old township of Yarri. Only the remains of the old pub remain. I found a stopper from an old glass bottle.
Turned down another track to the old Battery site but it is all fenced off. We drove around the edge of it - lots of big dams, probably from the cyanide days, hence the fencing. This track leads to the Edjundina Station Homestead so we turned around and headed back and then continued down the Yarri Road towards Kalgoorlie. Nice smooth gravel road - must have just been graded as there is no dust. We are following a mine truck.
Passed a majestic Wedgie standing resolutely on his ‘dinner’. He didn’t fly off even after we passed.
Into Menagina Station where we met road works signs. Further along we met the grader - doing a good job. He gets about 10-15km done per day. The mine truck called us pass which was nice of him.
Onto the next section that he needs to do and you can tell the difference. Into woodland country as we went around the top of another big salt lake area - Lake Rebecca. All red soil here.
Passed Ginalbie Station Homestead with signs about not going off the tracks etc. Through the old mine area then stopped for lunch at the site of the old Ginalbie township. Only an old well is here now and two recliner chairs under a tree!! Sadly people have used the well as their rubbish pit.
Continued on then turned onto gravel Gordon Road then followed an old fenceline track through low salt bush ground to check out a pending lease. It is marked as a scrape & detect area but we found a salt lake and a hill. Drove up the hill and found a couple of dig holes but definitely no sign of machinery scraping etc. Nice view from the top of the rise.
We found a better track out - just had a dozer over flattening out some areas. We might be on the Desert Rally track - the racing is later in October. We went to the Prologue last year. Onto a track beside big power lines till we reached the main bitumen road and headed towards Kalgoorlie.
Around to the Centennial Park rest area again. Very full but we managed to find a spot and set up. Didn’t bother with a photo.
Had a lovely video chat with Dan, Fran and Sophia. Great to be able to watch here starting to walk. We will have such fun when I get home.
Phone call with Annalise as her video connection wasn’t working. Jon is back at work. Beau has been having lovely cuddles with a friend’s baby so hopefully he will be happy to have a little brother soon.
There is a music event on in the sound shell. Nice and loud but the music is not too bad. It finished about 8pm.
