Sun, 28th Sept, 2025 Centennial Park 72hr Rest Area, Kalgoorlie to Bush camp by Lake Perkolilli, east of Kalgoorlie, WA (Red Dust Revival)

14.7 degrees, mostly clear sky.

Packed up and after getting a few groceries we all headed out to Lake Perkolilli to set up for the week of the Red Dust Revival organised by the Variety Club this year. The event happens every 3 years here. There is about 140 entrants this year.

Tony & Madeline had already gone out so they saved us a spot in the Competitors Camping Area. Bob & Margaret are in the Spectators Camping Area which isn’t far away. We dropped the camper off so Steve can drive me back into town on Tues morning for the train back to Perth.

Mal got the Buick out of the trailer so I got a photo before it is covered in red dust.

Tony had his 1928 Model A Ford out and took Margaret for a burn on the way back to their camp spot so she didn’t have to walk back. She was impressed.

Next to us in father & daughter racers from NSW. They drove it across pulling a little Teardrop van.

We went for a wander through the camps and then down to the ‘pits’. A lot of people are already here and there are heaps of pre 1939 cars and bikes to look at. They start ‘practice’ tomorrow with time trials on Thursday and then they are sorted into similar timed groups of 7 for the weekend. Lots of hotrods about too. Other than the dust they should have a good time.

The boys had a drink in the bar on their way back and Steve bought some new coolers and Mal got the program. I took photos of his and Tony’s stories.

While chatting over drinks I said about going for a ride and Tony said ‘come on then, get in’. It was great and fast! Mal followed in the Buick and we had a ‘drag’ along the salt flat. The ‘racing’ is over 4.5km round circuit of the lake but everyone is just going back in forward taking friends etc for rides on the outer area.

Back home with my very windswept hair and we continued chatting over drinks till the coolness set in. We cooked pizza and shared with Mal again. Kerry arrives on Wed so I won’t get to see her this trip. We saw a few satellites even with all the camp lights about.

I only had the windows open a bit as it was a warmer day but the dust has come in so Steve will be busy wiping down the benches each day. Will have to give it a good clean when I get back.
